THE INTERNETS!

Tonight Danielle turned on the camera in them middle of one of my rants around the house... the following video is what transpired.

The video is my gift to all the developers out there who slaved away on a game for months(years) only to have their worked bashed by anonymous forum kids on the Internet. Basically inspired by the latest comments/flame wars set forth by people trolling Tigsource.com and the indie games blog.

It felt good.

Sir, you get those game makers on the onlines. You get them, they're not as good as everyone says.

All you idiots who think this video is good are wrong. OMG. It's totally flawed. I mean, Edmund clearly doesn't know the first thing about making videos because if he did he never would have made this. Get a life.

I loved all your videos on the career-retrospective disc, and I really like what I think was the impetus for most/all of them. Thanks for being cool, Edmund.

Or you can be classy and go the Valve route:

"When you first encounter using outside playtesters, you go through these stages," Faliszek explained. "They're stages of denial. The first time you go, you see the guy not looking at what you want him to look at, and he's not going to the right place. You're like, 'You're an idiot. We got idiots for playtesters. Who is this, somebody's friend? Let's get somebody who knows how to play games.'"

"Then the second group comes through," he continued, "and you're still saying, 'Alright. Alright. You're stupid. What the hell? Who are these people?' Then by the third or fourth time, all of a sudden you're realizing, 'I'm an idiot. This is pretty obvious this doesn't work. It's not their fault, it's our fault.'"[1]

But that wouldn't be as interesting as you are.

That doesn't mean Braid is free from constructive criticism. It still has genuine problems.[2] This link is from a former employee of NEON Studios (Legend of Kay) in Frankfurt, Germany who's now trying to establish a Master course in Game Design and Research so please excuse their English.

Personally, the problem I had with Braid hasn't been covered in many reviews and posts I've come across-readability. In World 4, I ran and jumped to the right without really thinking about it. I heard the Pavlovian "ding!", grabbed the key from the enemy, and went onto to the next stage. It didn't dawn on me that there were new rules being introduced. Since 2D games are by design much simpler and leaner, World 4's new rules go by over most players' heads too quickly. This makes Braid feel like it's insormountable in spite of adding shorter puzzles and the ability to skip levels beforehand. Which ends up wasting his hard work because many intelligent people have given up on Braid.[3] Since Jonathon Blow ended up cutting too much, he should give people more time and space to let the new rules sink in so that players feel like they're progressing naturally. Otherwise, you'll find more people who lack the motivation to finish and then write about the elements that make Braid more unnecessarily difficult than it needs to be. Even masters like Hayao Miyzaki had problems with American publishers cutting too much from his old fashioned, slowly paced films.[4]

Hopefully my critique doesn't come off too harsh. Braid still manages to surprise even me, someone who has roamed the darkest corners of the internet for over a decade. That alone makes it a damn enjoyable game.

As long as people are discontent, they will generally find some way to vent. It's a poweful feeling even though they are essentially contributing nothing by writing about their unhappiness. I care and want to see you guys improve so more people can enjoy your awesome games. Please don't be discouraged, you shouldn't take all of your dissenters' words at face value. You're still young. As long as you've got the luxury of time to grow, you're doing well. Loved Spewer and looking forward to Super Meat Boy!

hmm, hey mark, i think you got the wrong idea about the video.

my goal there was simply to say that most people who state the obvious and talk out of their asses on the Internet look like idiots ( like i do in the video )... nothing more nothing less.

i understand the important's of criticism and am in no way stating that anything's above it, i was just simply mocking idiots for my own personal amusement, and to entertain others.

i did it because it was funny.

Oh. I thought that you were trying to point out the way some people misunderstood certain games in the vein of Braid. Like the way people thought killer7 was a shooter when it plays more like an old fashioned point and click adventure game. Braid seems like a platformer initially so when it unfolds into a puzzle game wrapped in a narrative, that wasn't what some people expected. They end up unsuccessfully trying to play the game like Super Mario. Only to rage quite and write about Braid-as if they were trying accomplish something big with their words-when it's actually a simple misunderstanding. You came as Matt Stone, Trey Parker and Jon Stewart in your video so it was a little hard to pinpoint where you were coming from.
